About the event

Explore the elegance of Indian semi-classical dance through graceful postures, rhythmic footwork, expressive hand gestures (mudras), and emotive storytelling. This class offers a welcoming introduction to Kuchipudi, one of India’s eight classical dance forms, rooted in centuries-old tradition and guided by the principles of the Natya Shastra, the ancient treatise on performing arts.

Designed for both beginners and curious movers, the class blends traditional technique with accessible semi-classical sequences, allowing participants to experience the joy of dance from the very start. Each session begins with an invocatory shlokam (chant), followed by a review of foundational mudras and foot positions, a yoga-based warm-up, and exercises to build strength, flexibility, and coordination. The class concludes with dance sequences drawn from semi-classical repertoire.

Kuchipudi is more than movement—it is a meditative and transformative art form. Whether you are new to Indian dance or reconnecting with its roots, this class invites you to experience its beauty, discipline, and devotional heart.

About Isha Ferraz

Isha Ferraz’s deep resonance with Indian culture, Vedic philosophy, spirituality, yoga, and classical arts led her to the rich and expressive tradition of Kuchipudi dance. She began her formal training in 2012 under Guru Smt. Divya Shaker in Austin, Texas. After relocating to California in 2014, she continued her practice under Guru Smt. Lakshmi Bhavani Konduru. In 2019, Isha further refined her Kuchipudi technique and understanding under the guidance of accomplished artist Yamini Kalluri.

Her journey as a teacher of Indian dance disciplines began in 2014 (she was teaching other dance forms from 2007), offering semi-classical workshops and classes for adults. Since then, she has taught in a variety of settings — both in person and online — to students across the U.S. and India. She helped found the Kritya School of Dance, where she served as an assistant instructor and managing director for several years. Isha also played a key role in launching the New York Kuchipudi Dance Festival, serving as both a performer and director during its inaugural year.

Continuously evolving as both an artist and educator, Isha remains devoted to sharing the beauty and depth of Indian dance. Through her teaching and performances, she seeks to inspire others to experience the transformative power of this sacred art form.
